The Mark Twain Journal: The Author and His Era particularly welcomes well-documented biographical, historical, and literary articles but will also consider critical essays of general interest. Authors of accepted articles will receive two copies of the issue in which their essay appears.

Submissions: Send electronic submissions (preferably double-spaced as a Word document) to [email protected]. In general, the Mark Twain Journal follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. The MTJ does not use in-text citations or footnotes, instead employing endnotes followed by a bibliography. Articles typically range from note-length to thirty pages. However, we accept longer essays if the topic merits it. Merriam Webster's Third New International Dictionary is consulted for spelling and usage.

Specifics: Olivia, not Livy; Clemens's, not Clemens', and nineteenth century, not 19th century. Writers may refer to either Sam Clemens or Mark Twain, but we prefer consistency in the absence of a compelling reason for variety.

Author warrants that the submitted essay has not been previously published in any media.

Permissions: The author is responsible for obtaining any required permissions for any quotations or images used in the article.

MTJ Style Sheet: For a detailed style sheet, please contact Dr. Joe B. Fulton, [email protected]
